Benefits: The benefits one obtains from a FirstLook® tool depends on why it is being used.

Used car dealers get many of their cars from auctions. Certain information about the vehicle is available with the VIN on the website: www.carfax.com. With a hand-held oscilloscope and a FirstLook® ES100 or ES 100-D, the buyer can determine the basic integrity of rings, valves, gaskets, and fuel injectors in a few minutes by a scan of the exhaust pipe at idle followed by a power-brake look at the exhaust. To be complete, a FirstLook® at the oil level indicator tube gives a very reliable picture to determine if the engine has ring 'issues'. For this 'quick scan', it is not important to know which cylinder(s) has/have the problem. This test also serves as a quick compression test, comparing all cylinders to the 'best' cylinder.

In addition, when the vehicle is on the lot, perhaps after injector and valve cleaner treatments if indicated, the dealer may offer a warranty to cover the engine based on the confidence obtained from the FirstLook® scan. This should result in increased price for the vehicle.

Most engine problems are not due to 'mechanical failure' of rings, valves, gaskets, injectors.  But the difficulty of testing these components encourages the mechanic to just readout the OBD computer codes which are not reliable if the engine mechanical components are compromised. The result is too often to replace multiple expensive, but easy to switch out, components before considering the mechanical failure of the basic engine.

This approach has two problems:

  1. Customers get very upset when a diagnosis and repair are faulty!
  2. The shop wastes the mechanic's time and bay time while the car is sitting there being erroneously diagnosed, or being 'fixed' for non-existent problems.

By attaching an inductive pickup, one can pinpoint the offending cylinder(s) to better assess the extent of the work required.

In addition, by providing visibility of the quality of the mechanical integrity, the FirstLook® scan enables the mechanic to propose condition-based maintenance on those components (rings, valves and injectors) that may not have yet 'failed', but are showing signs of deterioration.

In case of a major overhaul, use of FirstLook® before the engine has been re-installed (or returned to the customer) can increase the confidence that the repair has been successful or save many hours in case the rebuild was not totally accurate.
